History of the White Oak church of Christ
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE WHITE OAK CHURCH OF CHRIST

In 1947 there were 146 people living in the White Oak area who attended area churches of Christ. White Oak is the area from Stringers Ridge Tunnel to Culver Street. The area got its name from White Oak Springs on White Oak Road, part of which is now named Memorial Drive.

A tent meeting was conducted by the Woodland Heights church of Christ in the White Oak area in 1947 with brother W.J. (Willie) Lemons doing the preaching. The Sunday after the close of the tent meeting, a meeting was conducted in the Woodland Heights church building where a decision was made to establish a working fund to start a congregation in White Oak. William Jordan was selected as treasurer. Contributions and pledges were made that afternoon. B.A. Crisman and Bruce Crawley of the Red Bank chruch of Christ took a lead in this effort.

Soon property being operated as a flower shop at 2229 Lyndon Avenue was purchased from Mr. & Mrs. Albert B. Strong for $3,250.00. Immediately renovation began and the church met in the greenhouse portion of the flower shop, November 2, 1947, for the first time with brother Henry Geer preaching. Attendance was 94 that first Sunday in November, 104 the second Sunday, and 134 the third Sunday.

While continuing to meet in the greenhouse, construction of our present building got underway. The downstairs portion of the present facility was completed in 21 working days and we met in the new portion of the building January 18, 1948. Construction continued on the building with the men of the church doing most of the work. We moved into our present auditorium March 2, 1952.

White Oak's highest attendance was 569 for a Sunday afternoon singing. The lowest was 35 January 20, 1985 due to a heavy snow and icy conditions.
